Discover how the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to tackle Bengaluru's notorious traffic congestion with an 18-km underground tunnel.
The BBMP is constructing an 18-km-long underground tunnel road from Esteem Mall in Hebbal to Central Silk Board junction. Estimated at Rs 8,100 crore, the project aims to reduce travel time significantly.
Currently, the commute between Hebbal and Central Silk Board takes over an hour. The new tunnel will cut this down to just 20-25 minutes, providing a much-needed relief for Bengaluru's daily commuters.
The tunnel will have five entry and exit points: Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) quarters at Central Silk Board, Lalbagh, Bangalore Golf Club, Palace Grounds, and the vacant government land next to Esteem Mall in Hebbal.
According to BBMP Chief Engineer BS Prahalad, the feasibility report identifies 15 congestion points between Hebbal and Central Silk Board. The tunnel road is seen as the best solution to mitigate these issues.
The underground tunnel road is expected to be completed by January 1, 2025. This rapid timeline aims to bring swift relief to Bengaluru's traffic woes.
To maintain the tunnel, a user fee will be charged, though the exact amount is yet to be decided. This fee will ensure the tunnel remains in top condition.
BBMP Chief Engineer BS Prahalad emphasizes that the tunnel road is the most economically and scientifically viable solution for long-term traffic management in Bengaluru.
With the new underground tunnel road, Bengaluru is set to experience a significant reduction in traffic congestion, making daily commutes faster and more convenient. Stay tuned for more updates on this transformative project.
